American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) is a wild, native plant of North America and grows primarily in the Northeastern and Midwestern part of the United States of America. The root closely resembles the look of a parsnip, and can grow from 6″ to 18″, usually bearing 3 leaves, each with 3-5 leaflets. The plant is a perennial, and takes 3-5 growing seasons to reach full maturity and be cultivated. American ginseng is highly prized and sought after around the world for their unique taste that is imparted from the rich soil, minerals, and climate found in Marathon County, Wisconsin. It’s noteriety as a “cure-all” root by the Chinese and Native Americans led to the establishment of the cultivated American Ginseng Industry.
Features and Benefits
Family Roots – 2nd Generation Farming
Paul Hsu started his company in 1974 as a mail order business. In 1976, Paul hired his first employee, Ron Sandquist, as his farm manager. In 2011, the Hsu and Sandquist families’ second generation was integrated into the company. Will Hsu and Nick Sandquist now carry on the tradition of growing the highest quality American Ginseng in Marathon County, WI
Location – Marathon County, WI
Hsu’s Ginseng currently has over 1,000 acres of prime american ginseng farmland available for cultivation. Selecting the right growing conditions for our american ginseng farms is very important. We pick only certain soil types as ginseng plants prefer loamy, well drained, shady, and humus-rich soil at least 12 inches deep with a high organic content and a pH of 5.5.American Ginseng only thrives in virgin soil.In Wisconsin, after the fertile soil has been used for ginseng cultivation, we never use it again for ginseng, only raising other crops. For these special characteristics, American Ginseng grown in other areas of the USA may not look nor taste the same.
Harvesting – A Labor of Love
In early fall, the american ginseng seeds are gathered as the stems and leaves of the plant above ground begin to yellow and die off. We roll up and tie open the shade fabric in gardens we do not plan to harvest. For gardens we do plan to harvest, we remove posts, cables, and shade cloth. Just before harvesting, we scrape the beds to remove the straw cover, leaves and stems. Traditionally on smaller farms, a digger is pulled behind a tractor to mechanically dig each bed so that the american ginseng roots can be brought to the surface. Roots are harvested by hand off the ground.
Cooling and Drying – The Final Steps
After the roots are harvested, they are sorted and graded by lot, the roots that are dried are washed and chilled in walk-in coolers for weeks at a time. The last step in the process to take the final dried product from our farm to your door is to sort and grade each root by hand so they can be weighed and packaged. All of our grading and packaging facilities follow current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

My new favorite drink
This is my second time buying this product and I thought I’d finally give a rating. I originally bought it when seeking an alternative to caffeine to boost my energy. While the effect is much different than caffeine, for me it does have a very slight stimulating effect. I’ve grown to love the flavor of this ginseng tea as well. I usually add a teaspoon of honey but it’s great on its own.

First time I tried it I didn’t like the taste
Bought this tea. You have to acquire this taste. First time I tried it I didn’t like the taste, drinking this became a routine everyday. I’ll drink this 1 or 2 times a day. Gives me energy, helps me stay focused, and suppresses my appetite which I need since I’m fat.

Great product
I bought those for my parents and they like them. Will buy again next time I go home. The tea bags make them easy to consume (otherwise my parents might just never open them)

Two Opinions
I don’t think the tea had much flavor BUT my wife tasted it and said it was the worst tasting tea she ever had. So…..will you like it…try it and see. I like the box the tea bags are packaged in. There are 20 bags in the box. Unfortunately 1 sealed outer wrap bag is empty so I actually received 19 tea bags NOT 20. I kept the sealed empty bag in case the supplier wants to see it.

American Ginseng Tea
I was happy to see product delivered quickly and in perfect shape. Package was well wrapped for safety during shipping. As for the taste, really like the earthy ginseng flavor. Since I like a little sweetness to my tea I add a little honey which does the trick. I also prefer to make one cup of tea per bag for the stronger flavor but I could definitely see trying to brew and additional cup to get more value out of each bag.

Healthy chouce
I’ve been using this for a couple of weeks and truly have noticed a difference. I do recommend this is not a flavored tea.
