    Go manual!
I spent a lot of time researching and trying to figure out if I wanted a manual or an electric treadmill. After all the research and the reading of countless reviews, I decided on the Avari. I have had this treadmill for about a month now. I use it 2-3 days a week. The assembly was pretty easy, I assembled it myself (37 yo female), it took about 20 mins. I will be honest when I first used the machine I was disappointed and felt I had made a mistake. I had a hard time using it because it seemed too difficult. The incline was a killer! I took the advice of previous reviewers and used blocks (from my stepper) to even it out. Well, that made it harder to get the treadmill started and keep it going, which is why I’m assuming it is in an inclined position so that it’s easier to get inertia maybe. After about 30-40 mins of trying to figure out how I was going to make this thing “work” for me, I got frustrated and went to bed. The next day I decided to tackle it again and to my surprise I was able to walk on it (in the inclined position) with no problem. I set the tensioner to 4 or 5, as one of the reviewers suggested to do, and I was on the move! I was loving it. Now, I’m not sure what happened from the night before up until the time I tried using the treadmill again, but it was so much easier. I use it for 30-40 mins each time I use it and I’m pretty happy with that because I am sweating really good when I’m done. I only walk on it so I can’t speak on the running aspect. I have not had an issue with the belt sliding…I mean it slides a little, but not to the point where there is a problem, it has always corrected itself so far. The manual gives instruction on how to fix that problem. For the reviewers who complain about the belt sliding either they didn’t read the manual or just did not have the patience to calibrate it. I love the fact it is easy to fold up and move. It really is a space saver! I have it in my sitting room in my bedroom. The only downside I would say is that I always have to hold on when walking or I will slide off, but it isn’t that big of a deal. I do have to turn the tv volume up a little while I use the treadmill, but it’s not annoying. With all that being said, I am very happy with this manual treadmill. I like the design, the look and the magnetic resistance. It suits my needs. I think it gives me more of a workout than an electric one because I use my own muscles to keep it moving. I say buy this if you have limited space, if you are more of a casual exerciser, and if you have a tight budget. Enjoy!

If my machine isn’t defective, then no one should buy this thing
I bought this treadmill after reading a bunch of reviews here on Amazon. Some of the reviews were really good, some not so much. As a starting point, my machine arrived with broken parts. The broken parts did not affect the operation of the machine. Amazon rectified this to the point they were able. Assembly was not a difficult issue. Someone mentioned a very strong odor- yes, it smells bad and it smells bad for a LONG time. It’s made in China so take of the chemical smell what you will. Hopefully what it exudes isn’t toxic, even though it smells toxic. That said, I’ll move straight to the review of the machine that ended up at my house. Perhaps this piece of junk is an aberration and they are normally nice machines. Pros: yup- it’s quiet. In fact, it’s very, VERY quiet because it isn’t a useable piece of equipment. Before moving on to the long list of cons, here’s something about me- I’m not overweight. I’m mildly fit considering I’m not a runner. I do physical things a big part of the day. I walk a lot. I lift a lot. But on a cardiovascular level, I don’t get the sort of workout a treadmill (or elliptical bike or motorized treadmill) offers. I ditched my huge, loud, motorized, so-big-it-requires-its-own-room treadmill, and I bought this thing. That was a mistake. Cons: While the magnetic mechanism probably has the capacity to be a smooth-running thing, this one isn’t. This thing is hard to get moving.Really hard. And to keep it moving requires much grunting and groaning and this is on the lowest setting! What’s worse is that once I get the thing rolling, something in it catches and I’m jolted nearly to a stop so I have taken to counterbalancing on the hand rail to get from getting thrown from the machine. Seriously people, this is dangerous. I cannot use this machine without using the handholds and I used to be able to jog on my other treadmill like I’d jog on the road- without the use of a cane… It’s the jerkiest movement I have ever experienced and there’s just NO way to get a sensible workout on this thing- it jerks and stops and I just cannot keep it moving. At times it is so bad, I’m pressing at an angle toward the brace bars and, well, let me liken it to this: I feed livestock. At times I have to use the hay cart and I have to pull the entire load up a hill. Sure, it’s a good workout, but seriously, my treadmill on the lowest setting should NOT equal this exercise. But it does. I cannot walk upright on the thing, because to get it moving and to keep it moving requires that I push the belt and I have to push it so hard the only way to do it is to hang onto the brace bars while I chug. I did add a board to the back of the machine thinking I was just so danged unfit I needed to make the workout a bit easier, but this is a machine that only works in fits, starts, and brake-like stops, and I finally realize it isn’t me. There simply has to be a faulty mechanism within, or the magnetics are deeply flawed. It’s such a simple machine there really isn’t much to go wrong, but with this one, something very clearly has. The belt drifts. I have adjusted and adjusted and adjusted, and it simply doesn’t matter. My floor is level. I have taken to kicking the belt to the other side of the rollers and when it gets to the far left, I kick it back to the far right and go again. Disruptive? Yes it is. Is there some other fix? Heck if I know- I have tried everything. The bottom line here is that I must have the most defective magnetic treadmill ever made. Since it has gotten some fairly rave reviews, I can only believe that there is some fundamental, manufacturer’s defect in the machine I received. I’ve tried to describe the action of this treadmill but I don’t think I have been successful- it feels like the magnetics grab HARD, then suddenly let go again, then grab again at the most random intervals. To reiterate, this is on the lowest setting. On a higher setting, nothing changes, it’s still very hard to get the belt going and to keep the belt going. All-in-all it isn’t functional this way and to be blunt- it isn’t safe. I’d like to send it back, but the packaging was thrown away. I really don’t know what my options are at this point. I don’t believe the ridiculously jerky, sticky movement is a belt issue as there are times when the belt slides effortlessly (for the equivalent of about 15 feet or about 2 complete belt rotations) then it just stops and were I not holding on, I’d be face first on the floor. So no, I cannot use this thing- there is something very, VERY wrong with it. I don’t know what to do with the equipment at this point. I simply cannot recommend this treadmill- not for any reason- and I’m upset that I had such high hopes of having a very quiet, small-footprint treadmill to use during the winter months. Do not waste your money on this- try-then-buy a piece of equipment that does what it says it does.

    Great buy
Bought 2 of these as Christmas presents for my mother and mother-in-law. Both women are in their late 70’s with my mother-in-law being pretty hefty with a hip replacement. Both of them love the product so far. The only complaint is that it is on an incline and until your leg muscle get used to it you may experience some tenderness. You can alleviate some of that by putting a board under the rear of the treadmill to lessen the incline. Other reviewers noted that the tension knob didn’t make a noticeable difference when increased but both mothers did feel the difference in exertion needed when it was turned up. Assembly was very easy and the product is very sturdy and solid. We did have to spray the treadmill with some silicone spray to make the belt a little smoother for the mothers but our 22 year old niece walked on it with no problem (then again she is 22).Both women have it set up in the TV room to make the time go by faster. It folds up easily and can be rolled into a corner readily.I would have given it 5 stars except that one of the treadmills when folded the latch did not hold it securely in place, it was a bit too far away so that if your not careful it can work itself loose. This wasn’t a big enough deal to ship it back and in this case the treadmill has a dedicated spot so it remains unfolded constantly. And rigging something up to hold the platform in place more securely would not be a big deal if needed. All in all, for the price, this is a very solid well built compact piece of exercise equipment and a perfect alternative to an electric treadmill.PROS: Price, ease of assembly, solid construction, smooth operation, compact design, manuverabilityCONS: latch didn’t hold the platform in the folded position very well.
