My favorite probiotics, shelf stable & well considered selection of microbe strains
I’ve tried a multitude of probiotic strains – those that are shelf stable by a variety of brands, those that require refrigeration, those that are provider only brands (meaning you can only get them from licensed providers), more expensive brands, etc. and I consistently like and return to Jarrow EPS.Why I like the Jarrow EPS:Consistently reliable:The Jarrow brand consistently has what it claims and with no hidden ingredients or harmful chemicals as verified by consumer lab, an independent lab that checks supplements to see if what they claim to have inside they really do, while also looking for harmful contaminants & other hidden ingredients. I highly recommend you join their membership to access their many reviews on supplements as well as reports on various supplements, what they’re supposed to do, what evidence supports it (or not) etc. they’re a great, reliable, independent source for information.Gentle (plus how to avoid gurgles/gas when you first start any probiotic):I have not experienced any abdominal distress or other issues with this brand. That being said, do bear in mind that you need to slowly introduce any new probiotic to your body. Don’t take these for the first time ever right before that fancy date or big interview. In general, many probiotics can make you a bit gurgly/gassy when you first start on them if you’ve never taken probiotics before. Always start low (low doses) and go slow (slowly increase amounts) to see how they’ll effect you. For EPS and other gut probiotics you may be gurgly for a week or so while the good buggies move in, get established and overtake some of the bad buggies. I look at it like a neighborhood turf war….the neighborhood’s gone down hill, lots of miscreants and hooligans (sounds more ominous with those words…) and some new folks are moving in with the intention of cleaning up the place and making it respectable again – there’s always a bit of fuss before things settle in. If you’re super sensitive, start every other day or every 3rd day and work your way up – seriously, some tummies are much more sensitive than others and especially if you have a lot of the bad buggies settled in (which can happen if you’ve taken lots of antibiotics, as they kill everything good and bad and often it’s the mean baddies that are most aggressive at re-settling your gut neighborhood and can become dominant).Shelf Stable:These are going to be fine in the cabinet for most folks, unless you live somewhere that gets hot and you don’t use A/C. They’ll survive short-term in your purse unless you’re out in the sun somewhere & they heat up (the average temp in most offices, places of business, etc. are all fine). They definitely will not survive your pocket, as your body temp is approx 98.6 and way too hot for them. Again, I’ve had good luck with the shelf stable Jarrow probiotics and the EPS are easy and great to take along when traveling (unless you’re going rugged style in hot places, then the above again applies). These are no different and would be easy to take along as well.They have the happy mood strains:This mix includes the probiotics most known for influencing mood, specifically anxiety and depression. Yes, having low numbers of these happy-bugs can increase your anxiety and drop your mood into the blues. Google it. In addition, moving in good bugs can help balance and decrease the bad bugs and candidas is one of the bad guys (a yeast) that can also negatively impact your mood, so probiotics in general can help on that end. Beyond the happy strains, all the included strains are those that have shown benefit to the digestive system (and other systems) in various studies. The challenge is that we are more microbe than human (again, google it – we have more microbe cells within & on our body than we do human cells) and there are millions of them and thousands of different strains. We’ve only begun to scrape the surface of what strains do what, which work well together in a synergistic manner, etc. So while 8 different strains are better than a single strain probiotic, we’re still pretty kindergarten in our understanding and use of microbes for health.Other probiotics I also like:I also like these two by Garden of Life: Primal defense ultra Garden of Life Whole Food Probiotic Supplement – Primal Defense ULTRA Ultimate Probiotic Dietary Supplement for Digestive and Gut Health, 90 Vegetarian Capsules and Garden of Life Vegetarian Digestive Supplement for Women – Raw Enzymes Women for Digestion, Bloating, Gas, and IBS, 90 Capsules . Both of these also have consistently reliable results from Consumer lab & I find them gentle for my stomach. So why do I like Jarrow better? Simply because they’re shelf stable & I don’t have to worry about keeping them cold in the fridge, were they properly shipped and stored wherever they’ve been before they got to me, etc.

Keeps husband’s gut happy
This has been a great product for my husband to stay regular. Not necessarily what it’s intended to do but helps his gut regulate and stay regular.

Pre-travel probiotics
I had a trip planned to Mexico and decided to take probiotics before and during my trip. I am dairy free and didn’t want to mess with refrigerated probiotics so these fit the bill. I honestly can’t tell if they did anything for me but, hey, I didn’t get sick!

This works
I take 2 in the am and 2 at bed time and I go to the bathroom everyday. I have been using this for years on and off. Top quality product.
